A physical Recreational Therapy program designed for people with Serious Mental Illness.
Program Description
Activities:
Make Your Move is an 8-week activity program that meets once per week for 60 minutes per session. This program is held in a recreational facility with access to open outdoor and indoor spaces. This program has up to ten participants ranging from ages 14 to 18 diagnosed with SMI. Each session will include different physical activities varying from high to low-intensity levels, and starting week 3 on alternate sessions, participants will improve leisure planning skills. Sessions will begin with a 15-minute wellness check-in which consists of introducing participants while passing around a light ball and light stretching in preparation for physical activity exercises. While passing the ball around, topics can include name introductions, how they feel today, and anything else going on in their lives they may want to share with the group. In the group activity session that will last 30 minutes, activities will include low-intensity and high-intensity activities depending on the day. Some physical activities that will be done are yoga, Zumba, hula hooping, and spin classes. Accommodations can be made for all the participants depending on strengths and abilities. On alternate sessions, participants will work on planning activities for independent facilitation through decision-making skills, finding leisure interests, and preparation for engagement in future activities. The participants conclude with a 15-minute briefing which consists of a reflection of the activity and goals for future sessions. The session will end with a 5-minute closing which consists of asking participants if they have any further thoughts, a description of the next session, and closing of the session.
