Make Your Move

Leader (s)

Julia

Leisure Ed Content Area and Sub-category

The section, Leisure Awareness is designed to identify four areas essential in facilitating the development and expression of appropriate leisure lifestyle. The components are of Leisure Awareness are knowledge of leisure, self-awareness, leisure and play attitudes, and related participatory and decision-making skills. This contemporary approach of Leisure Awareness focuses on the understanding of leisure even if the individual does not immediately respond to leisure education programming because they are still exposed to information that can later be found useful.

Session Sequence

Sequence of Session 6

 Introduction (15 mins)

  • Facilitator will welcome participants to the 6th session of Make Your Move while being seated in a circle.

  • After participants are seated, the 15-minute wellness check-in will begin by a light ball being passed around the circle. When the participant is holding the ball, they will introduce themselves and their guest.

  • After the ball has been passed around the full circle, the chairs will be pushed aside.

  • Facilitator will instruct class to all stand in a single horizontal line with arms-length apart from each other. First shoulder rolls, overhead stretch, quad stretch, toe touch stretch.

  • Facilitator will lead light stretches in preparation for physical activity exercises. First shoulder rolls, overhead stretch, quad stretch, then toe touch stretch.

  • Facilitator will explain today’s goals are to demonstrate the skills to perform three dances, participate in a 10-minute physical activity led by a group member, educate guests on the benefits of physical activity, and identify how peers provide motivation for physical activity.

  • Facilitator will close the introduction.

Activity (30 mins)

  • Facilitator will instruct participants and their peer to spread out around the room.

  • Facilitator will explain to everyone that they (the facilitator) will be handling the controls in the front of the room. Everyone will follow along with the facilitator and dances shown on the TV at the front of the room for 15 minutes.

  • Facilitator will explain to the peers, they may either cheer on the individual or join the physical activity.

  • Facilitator will provide three song options for the group to choose from to learn a skill level ‘easy’ dance from “Just Dance” on the Wii.

  • Facilitator will guide the participants and peer through a ‘easy’ dance with the chosen song.

  • Facilitator will provide three new song options for the group to choose from to learn a skill level ‘medium’ dance from “Just Dance” on the Wii.

  • Facilitator will guide the participants and peer through a ‘medium’ dance with the chosen song.

  • Facilitator will provide three more song options for the group to choose from to learn a skill level ‘hard’ dance from “Just Dance” on the Wii.

  • Facilitator will guide the participants and peer through a ‘hard’ dance with the chosen song.

  • Facilitator will instruct the participants, for 5 minutes, to discuss the benefits of physical activity with their peer and to educate their guest on at least three reasons to engage in physical activity.

    • The dialogue should include benefits of physical activity that are achievable/noticeable in the near future and reasons to engage in physical activity related to issues in our lives.

  • Facilitator will encourage one or two people(s) to share a 10- minute physical activity plan they have made for today’s group to engage in.

  • The group will participate in the chosen activity of the group member(s) for the final 10 minutes of activity. Peers are welcome to join.

  • Facilitator will direct participant’s and their guest’s attention back to the front of the room for debriefing and closing.

Debriefing (10 mins)

  • For 10 minutes, the participants should reflect on the activity with their guest or nearby group members. Here are some questions to think about:

    • Did having a peer present during the activity provide motivation or encouragement for physical performance? How?

    • During the discussion with peers, could you list more than three benefits of physical activity?

    • What benefits of physical activity can your peer suggest?

Closing (5 mins)

  • Facilitator will direct everyone’s attention to the front of the room for five minutes to close out session 6.

  • Facilitator will remind the participants that until the end of the program, one participant a week will be responsible to plan one 10-minute physical activity for the group to engage in during the session.

  • Facilitator will inform the group they will participate in a hula-hooping activity next session.

  • Facilitator will ask today’s guests to voluntarily share a positive experience about today’s session and how they can incorporate physical activity into their own lives.

  • Facilitator will thank the group for attending and participating in today’s session and dismiss everyone from session 6.
