Make Your Move

The section of the Leisure Ed Content model that this session focuses on is Leisure and Play attitudes. By week 7 of Make Your Move, participants should have already developed an understanding of the origin of one’spersonal beliefs and values about leisure. Leisure and Play attitudes revolve around the impact of the individual’s attitudes towards leisure on current and future lifestyle.

60 minutes

Session Preparation

  • Materials

    • Ball

    • 1 case of bottled water

    • 10 Hula Hoops)

    • 10 Jump Ropes 

    • 10 Mats

    • Speaker and a phone to connect to

  • Location:

    • An outdoor space with adequate lighting and enough room for participants to be able to move.  The facilitator will bring 10 hula hoops, 10 jump ropes, 10 mats to put aside for the participants to grab when they arrive. 

  • Preparation:

    • ​From week 7 to the end of the program, one to two participants a week will be responsible to plan a 10-minute physical activity for the group to participate in. Before the start of the session, the individual has been previously notified by the CTRS and has a physical activity prepared for this session. Activities may include yoga, light stretching, or anything of interest and considered to be physical activity.

Session Goals

TPO: Through participation in Make Your Move participants will demonstrate the knowledge and benefits of physical activity as well as the ability to participate and plan a physical leisure activity.


EO 1: To demonstrate continued participation in physical activities through intrinsic motivation. 

     PM 1.1:  Participants will demonstrate knowledge of personal motivation in physical activities as assessed by a follow-up discussion asking participants why they participated.

     PM 1.2: Participants will identify a meaningful activity and share with the rest of the group why the physical activity is meaningful to them.


EO 2: To demonstrate acquired knowledge and skills to independently facilitate physical activity.

     PM 2.1: During session 7 activity, one to two participants will plan one 10 minutes physical activity for the whole group to do.

     PM 2.2: The participant will be able to acknowledge the use of at least 1 physical equipment tool (i.e. hula hoop) as well as how to use the tool and benefits by the end of week 7.

Session Sequence

Sequence of Session 7

 Introduction (15 mins)

  • Facilitator will connect the phone to Spotify and play the playlist created during Session 2. By the facilitator having a motivational tone directed towards the participants, it will motivate participants to have an upbeat and excited attitude for the rest of the session.

  • Facilitator will welcome back participants for the 7th session of Make Your Move.

  • Facilitator will introduce to the participants the schedule for the session which includes the Wellness Check-In, stretches, demonstration and peer-led physical activity from the remaining 1-2 participants from the previous session and then a high-intensity cardio workout using jump ropes and hula hoops;.

  • Facilitator will bring out the ball and initiate a standing circle of participants. 

  • Facilitator will pass the ball to the right of the one of the participants, as that participant will initiate the Wellness Check-In.

  • After everyone has been passed the ball, the facilitator will introduce stretches to the class.

  • The facilitator will instruct class to all stand in a single horizontal line arms length apart from each other.

  • Facilitator will start leading a series of stretching. First shoulder rolls, overhead stretch, quad stretch, toe touch stretch.

  • Facilitator will close out the intro and announce to the group that they will move forward to the peer-led physical activity demonstration.

Activity (30 mins)

  • Facilitator will ask everyone to remain seated after the 15 minute wellness check in and one or two person(s) will share a physical activity plan they have made for the group to engage in. 

  • The group will participate in the chosen activity of the group member(s).

  • After the group has finished the 10-minute activity, the facilitator will instruct the participants to stand in 2 rows of 5, arms-length apart facing the facilitator.

  • Facilitator will lead a 15 minute hula hoop activity (Video is in the resources section of this session).

  • Facilitator follows workout plan from YouTube video (refer to reference section of this session).

  • When participants are finished with the 15 minute hula hoop activity, the facilitator encourages a quick water break.

Debriefing (10 mins)

  • The facilitator will lead debriefing questions to discuss today’s sessions in order to converse about what the participants think of the hula hoop activity.

    • Why did you participate in the activity?

    • What was your biggest challenge in today's session? How did you overcome it/how will you overcome this in the future?

    • What did you learn from the facilitator’s activity?

    • What did you learn about yourself from this activity? 

    • Why did you participate?

    • Why is this physical activity meaningful to you?

    • What are the benefits of using a hula hoop?

Closing (5 mins)

  • Facilitator will close out the  session.

  • Facilitator will ask the group if they have any questions or closing thoughts.

  • Facilitator will assign the group to do a physical activity next week.

  • Facilitator will tell the group that the last session will be a showcase where every participant will have the opportunity to to discuss their future physical activity that they plan to attend after the program including how they will get there, where the physical activity is located, explain what the physical activity is, be able to demonstrate to the rest of the group some moves that is part of the physical activity, and explain to the group the benefits of their chosen physical activity.

  • Facilitator will instruct the participants to bring in snacks for the end of the program showcase party.

  • Facilitator will thank the group for participating and say “goodbye”.
