A physical Recreational Therapy program designed for people with Serious Mental Illness.

Make Your Move

Leisure Ed Content Area and Sub-category
In this session, participants will learn about the importance of leisure from the physical aspect and its benefits of leisure awareness. The participants will be making the active decision to go to this programming once a week which is a part of the decision-making skills sub-category. Participants will also be learning about future areas of discovery and involvement which is a part of the self-awareness portion of this model. Then the participants will be working on social interaction skills. This includes communication skills such as conversations, active listening, expressing feelings and thoughts.

Materials
2 spin bikes
2 yoga matts
2 sets of jump ropes
2 hula hoops
space for Zumba
1 ball for stretching
10 stools
10 iPads provided by the leader with a case to stand it on the stool
Location- Large outdoor Space for in order to set up a circuit and to be able to have space to stretch and pass the ball. In order to do this, set up all two sets of materials such as two yoga matts, two hula hoops ect. in a big circle. Each station will have 10 ipads on stools for the participants to follow. Have the ball for stretching at the beginning of class in the center and placing Ipads 2 at each circuit for participants to follow.
Session Goals
TPO: Through participation in Make Your Move participants will demonstrate the knowledge and benefits of physical activity as well as the ability to participate and plan a physical leisure activity.
EO 2: To demonstrate awareness and understanding of the purpose and benefits of engaging in physical activity.
PM 2.1: During session 1’s debriefing of Make Your Move each participant will make a list of five meaningful physical activities they are interested in engaging in.
PM 2.2: By the beginning of 2nd session participants will have the ability to come to the program with three songs they like to work out to and share with the group.
EO 3: To demonstrate acquired knowledge and skills to independently facilitate physical activity.
PM 3.1: Participants will independently choose an activity based on their leisure interests to explain at least three physical benefits of participation by the second week of the program.
PM 3.2: During session 1 ‘s debriefing participants will make a list of five things they are looking forward to gaining from this program as approved by the CTRS.
Session Sequence
Sequence of Session 1
Introduction (15 mins)
Facilitator will stand and gather all participants
The Facilitator will explain we will be doing this activity for 30 minutes. This is a circuit in groups of two. So two participants at each station.
The circuit includes a yoga station, a spin bike station, Zumba station, a jump rope station, and a hula hoop station.
Each station has a guided iPad with a guided video prepared for the participants to use to guide them. (All videos are in the resources section of this session)
The facilitator counts off in 5’s twice so that there are two people at each station.
All the 1’s are directed to go to yoga, the 2’s will be directed to go to spin, 3’s to Zumba, 4’s to jump rope, and 5’s to hula hoop.
The participants will then set up at the directed station and watch and follow the guided video.
After the five minutes are up the participants will then move to the right.
The facilitator will make an announcement when it is time to switch stations after 5 minutes.
This will keep going until participants reach 15 minutes where they will get a five-minute water break. Then resume in the direction they left off on.
The participants will end at 30-minute mark.

Debriefing (10 mins)
The facilitator will lead debriefing questions and discuss the purpose of the activity. The overall interest in the circuit we engaged in today

Closing (5 mins)
Facilitator will close out the session
The facilitator will ask if they have any questions or closing thoughts?
The Facilitator will explain that next week they will be doing Spin workout
The homework for the next session will be to come to class with three of your favorite songs.
The facilitator will thank the group for participating and say “goodbye”
